At MHSC Energy, we believe great lighting is the foundation of safer, more efficient, and more welcoming spaces. Lighting doesn’t just help people see—it helps them feel secure, improves navigation, and enhances the overall experience of a place. Our recent project at Central Park Shopping Centre demonstrates how a well-executed lighting upgrade can deliver all of these benefits while adding long-term value for property owners and tenants.
Project Goals
The parking lot is often the first and last part of the shopping experience. For Central Park Shopping Centre, the previous lighting system no longer met modern expectations. Some areas were underlit, creating shadows and dark corners that made customers uneasy. The older fixtures also consumed more energy than necessary, raising operating costs for the property.
Our goals for this project were clear and multifaceted:
Enhance Safety and Security: Ensure both pedestrians and drivers could navigate comfortably at all times of day. Improved visibility also plays a critical role in deterring theft, vandalism, and other safety concerns.
Create a Welcoming Environment: A well-lit parking lot invites people to stay longer and visit more often, supporting the businesses located at the centre.
Improve Energy Efficiency: By switching to modern LED technology, the shopping centre could lower its electricity usage while still achieving better light quality.
Reduce Maintenance: Installing high-performance luminaires designed for longevity meant fewer service interruptions and lower replacement costs over time.
Technical Specifications
To achieve these outcomes, MHSC Energy specified the NBAL-300W T4X3 luminaire. Known for its high lumen output and consistent performance, this fixture was an excellent fit for large, open spaces like parking lots.
Project Specifications:
Luminaire Model: NBAL-300W T4X3
Quantity Installed: 5
Luminaire Lumens: 37,876 per fixture
Total Wattage: 4,500W
Light Loss Factor (LLF): 1.000
Mounting Height: 40 feet
Wall Height: 15–30 feet
Workplane Height: 2.5 feet
Reflectance Values: Ceiling 0.80, Walls 0.50, Floor 0.20
By combining an appropriate mounting height with powerful, efficient fixtures, we ensured optimal coverage and brightness across the entire lot.
Lighting Performance
The new design delivered an average illumination of 2.20 foot-candles, which converts to approximately 23.7 lux. This level of light exceeds typical industry guidelines for outdoor parking lots, striking the right balance between energy efficiency and visibility.
Equally important, the system produced peak illumination of 91.5 foot-candles (around 985 lux) in high-traffic areas, including entrances and walkways where pedestrian and vehicle interactions are most common. These focused lighting levels create a safer flow of traffic and help customers feel more secure when entering or leaving the centre after dark.
Uniformity was also a key design consideration. Uneven lighting creates patches of brightness and darkness that can actually reduce visibility. Our layout ensured smooth, consistent coverage across the lot, making it easier for drivers to see pedestrians, navigate tight spaces, and avoid potential hazards.
Results and Benefits
The results of this project extend well beyond just new light poles and fixtures:
Safety Improvements: With shadows eliminated and visibility dramatically increased, the risk of accidents, collisions, and security concerns has been significantly reduced.
Stronger Customer Experience: Visitors now enjoy a welcoming, well-lit environment that encourages evening shopping, dining, and social activities at the centre. A safer lot means customers feel more comfortable returning.
Energy and Cost Savings: The NBAL-300W T4X3 luminaires provide exceptional brightness without wasted energy, reducing overall operating costs. Over time, these savings contribute directly to the shopping centre’s bottom line.
Reliability and Durability: With an LLF of 1.000 and a design built for outdoor performance, the fixtures are engineered to last. This reduces downtime, lowers maintenance budgets, and provides peace of mind for the property management team.
Enhanced Aesthetic Appeal: Bright, uniform light doesn’t just improve function—it also enhances the visual appeal of the space. The lot now feels cleaner, more modern, and more professional.
A Lasting Impact
For Central Park Shopping Centre, this project represents more than just a technical upgrade—it’s an investment in community safety and customer experience. A well-lit parking lot helps attract visitors, supports local businesses, and contributes to a positive reputation for the entire property.
At MHSC Energy, we approach every project with this bigger picture in mind. Our role is not only to deliver high-quality lighting products, but also to design systems that make a lasting difference in the way spaces are used and enjoyed. With each project, we reaffirm our commitment to creating environments that are safer, smarter, and more sustainable.
