Optimizing Illumination: MHSC Energy’s Lighting Upgrade at Camping World Nashville

At MHSC Energy, we specialize in delivering high-performance lighting solutions designed to improve safety, efficiency, and visual comfort across a variety of commercial and industrial settings. Our recent project at Camping World Nashville is a strong example of how modern lighting technology, when thoughtfully applied, can completely transform a large-scale facility.

This project involved two major builds, covering both the body bay and service bay areas of the location. The goal was simple: increase light levels, improve uniformity, and create a more productive and safer environment for employees while also enhancing the customer experience.

Project Overview

Camping World Nashville serves as both a service hub and customer-focused retail space, creating unique challenges for its lighting needs. The existing system lacked the brightness and uniformity necessary to meet modern operational standards.

Key objectives included:

  • Boosting overall light levels to improve visibility for technicians and staff.

  • Eliminating shadows and dark zones in high-traffic and work areas.

  • Incorporating durable, efficient fixtures to minimize maintenance and energy costs.

  • Adding vapor-proof fixtures in areas exposed to mist and moisture for added protection.

This comprehensive approach required a precise balance of fixture selection, strategic layout design, and careful attention to environmental factors unique to the site.

Fixture Selection and System Design

The solution included a five-fixture layout, using a range of high-output luminaires to address the diverse lighting needs across the building. Each fixture was chosen based on the specific requirements of the space it served:

  • FS45040 WRAP Fixtures (Qty: 2)

    • Lumens: 5,154

    • Total Watts: 78.2

    • LLF: 0.950

  • LHB5-130W50K Fixtures (Qty: 55)

    • Lumens: 18,096

    • Total Watts: 7,407.95

    • LLF: 0.950

  • VP3-4PS65-FCCT-H Vapor-Proof Fixtures (Qty: 30)

    • Lumens: 9,041

    • Total Watts: 1,951.5

    • LLF: 1.000

  • SFS44040 Fixtures (Qty: 6)

    • Lumens: 6,048

    • Total Watts: 225.6

    • LLF: 1.000

  • LHB5-175W Fixtures (Qty: 51)

    • Lumens: 25,113

    • Total Watts: 8,904.60

    • LLF: 1.000

  • PLB4 Fixtures (Qty: 2)

    • Lumens: 3,827

    • Total Watts: 61.2

    • LLF: 1.000

  • PLB32x450W 5000K Fixtures (Qty: 10)

    • Lumens: 6,400

    • Total Watts: 468.07

    • LLF: 1.000

  • LHB15050 Fixtures (Qty: 2)

    • Lumens: 19,110

    • Total Watts: 300.2

    • LLF: 1.000

The addition of vapor-proof fixtures was especially important in the service bays, where mist and moisture are present during routine maintenance. While not fully waterproof, these fixtures are engineered to withstand humid and damp conditions, ensuring durability and consistent performance over time.

Lighting Performance and Analysis

A project of this size required precise photometric analysis to achieve optimal results. By simulating light levels and distribution in advance, we were able to plan fixture placement and adjust mounting heights to ensure uniform coverage throughout the facility.

The results were exceptional:

  • Commercial Area: Average 83.65 foot-candles (~900 lux)

  • Commercial Offices: Average 53.57 foot-candles (~576 lux)

  • Shop Offices: Average 94.19 foot-candles (~1,013 lux)

  • Shop Space: Average 107.75 foot-candles (~1,159 lux)

Conversion note: 1 foot-candle = 10.764 lux

These levels deliver clean, bright, and even illumination, perfectly suited for the tasks performed in each space, from precision repairs to administrative work.

Strategic Layout and Installation

One of the defining aspects of this project was the customized installation strategy. With wall heights of 21 feet and a variety of mounting heights — 8, 12, 16, and 19 feet — our team carefully adapted the design to fit the structure while maintaining optimal light spread.

Reflectance values were also carefully considered:

  • Ceiling Reflectance: 0.80

  • Wall Reflectance: 0.50

  • Floor Reflectance: 0.20

These factors ensured that every lumen delivered by the fixtures was effectively used, reducing energy waste and preventing uneven light distribution.

Key Benefits of the Upgrade

The upgraded lighting system at Camping World Nashville delivered significant benefits from the moment it was turned on:

  • Enhanced Safety
Brighter, evenly distributed light minimizes shadows and dark areas, reducing the risk of workplace accidents and improving visibility during intricate tasks.

  • Increased Productivity
Well-lit workspaces support accuracy and efficiency, allowing technicians to complete jobs more quickly and with greater precision.

  • Energy Efficiency
High-output LED fixtures deliver superior light performance while consuming less energy, reducing operational costs and environmental impact.

  • Durability and Reliability
From vapor-proof fixtures in the bays to robust overhead lights in the commercial offices, the system is designed for long-term performance with minimal maintenance requirements.

  • Modern Aesthetic Appeal
Beyond functionality, the upgraded lighting enhances the overall appearance of the facility, creating a clean, professional look that customers and staff appreciate.

A Tailored Approach for a Demanding Environment

This project at Camping World Nashville highlights MHSC Energy’s ability to design and implement lighting systems tailored to complex commercial needs. By combining cutting-edge fixtures with a strategic design approach, we delivered a solution that supports operational efficiency, safety, and long-term cost savings.

Every step of the project — from initial design and analysis to final installation — was handled with precision and expertise, resulting in a system that will serve the facility reliably for years to come.
