Camping World Project – Columbia, SC

At MHSC Energy, we understand that every commercial facility has unique lighting needs—and the Camping World site in Columbia, South Carolina was no exception. With its combination of showroom, retail, and functional work areas, this project demanded a layered lighting strategy using multiple fixture types.

The result? A versatile lighting layout that balances aesthetic clarity, energy performance, and installation simplicity—a win for both the client and any contractor working the site.

Luminaire Specifications

The Columbia project makes use of four distinct fixture types to meet the different lighting demands across the space. Whether it’s broad coverage in open floor areas or focused illumination in tighter spots, each luminaire was chosen for performance and compatibility.

Fixture Breakdown

1. PLB3-2×2 40W

  • Lamps/Fixture: 1

  • Lumens/Lamp: 4,588.1

  • Delivered Lumens: 4,542

  • Total Wattage: 37.20 W

  • Quantity: 1

  • Efficiency: 99%

  • LLF: 1.000

2. LHB5-UW3CCT-220W (High Bay Workhorse)

  • Lamps/Fixture: 1

  • Delivered Lumens: 32,837

  • Total Wattage: 9,749.7 W

  • Quantity: 45

  • LLF: 1.000

3. PLB32x450W 5000K (General Area Lighting)

  • Lamps/Fixture: 1

  • Lumens/Lamp: 6,407.4

  • Delivered Lumens: 6,400

  • Total Wattage: 561.68 W

  • Quantity: 12

  • Efficiency: 100%

  • LLF: 1.000

4. BLINK 62-1720 (Spot or Accent Fixture)

  • Lamps/Fixture: 1

  • Lumens/Lamp: 1,378.5

  • Delivered Lumens: 1,379

  • Total Wattage: 12.76 W

  • Quantity: 1

  • Efficiency: 100%

  • LLF: 1.000

By mixing these luminaires across different functional zones, we were able to balance coverage, energy use, and aesthetic quality. Each fixture was placed with intention—ensuring optimal visibility without excess light spillage or inefficient overlap.

Layout & Photometric Details

This layout was built with precise coordinate-based modeling to reflect the existing architectural details and future operational needs. Here’s a quick look at the layout dimensions used for modeling:

  • Wall Height: 24 ft

  • Mounting Height: 20 ft

  • Workplane Height: 2.5 ft

The 20-foot mounting height works especially well with the high-bay fixtures, ensuring wide distribution of light across open zones like vehicle display areas and merchandise rows. For smaller or more intimate zones, fixtures like the PLB3 or BLINK were introduced to soften the effect and fill in photometric gaps.

Reflectance Values (Defaulted for Accuracy):

  • Ceiling Reflectance: 0.80

  • Wall Reflectance: 0.50

  • Floor Reflectance: 0.20

These reflectance values give us a conservative baseline for illuminance modeling. We often choose the lower end of typical reflectance to ensure we’re not overestimating brightness. In practice, the space is likely to appear slightly brighter than calculated, which is ideal for safety and visual clarity.

Lighting Strategy: Layered & Intentional

Unlike warehouse-only projects, the Camping World facility required us to think in layers:

  • Showroom and Retail Areas: Needed more refined, evenly diffused lighting—delivered by the PLB and BLINK fixtures.

  • Open Bay Areas: Called for high-power, efficient lighting—met by the 220W high bay luminaires.

  • Task Zones: Smaller PLB32x450W units supported localized brightness near desks, display counters, or checkout areas.

This kind of hybrid approach benefits lighting contractors by providing clear zones of responsibility and fixture types, helping streamline procurement, planning, and installation. It’s a well-structured, contractor-friendly plan that doesn’t require rework once the racking or showroom configurations go in.

Installation Made Easy

Even with the variation in fixture types, this layout is simple to install. We intentionally used standard mounting heights and fixture groupings to make setup predictable and repeatable. That translates to:

  • Faster installs

  • Fewer layout revisions

  • Easier troubleshooting or adjustments

It also ensures that future changes—whether shifting retail displays or adding signage—won’t require a total lighting overhaul.

A Bright Finish for a Versatile Space

The Columbia Camping World project demonstrates how thoughtful fixture selection and smart layout planning can light a diverse, multipurpose space efficiently. Whether it’s customer comfort in the showroom or visibility and safety in functional zones, this design performs on all levels.

At MHSC Energy, we’re proud to deliver solutions that are as install-ready as they are high-performing. If you’re a contractor looking to bid or build smarter, our team is ready to partner with you on your next project.
