At MHSC Energy, we don’t just provide lighting layouts—we provide field-ready solutions that are scalable, flexible, and contractor-friendly. Our latest project at McCoy’s Building Supply in Las Cruces, NM showcases exactly how thoughtful design and clean grid-based lighting can prepare a space for both immediate use and long-term adaptability.
Smart Layout for a Flexible Space
The Las Cruces layout was designed for a rack-free environment, giving us the freedom to lay out fixtures in a symmetrical, performance-optimized grid. This approach ensures light is distributed evenly across the entire facility, regardless of where shelving or storage is added in the future.
Why is this important? Because McCoy’s facilities are dynamic—they shift, expand, and reconfigure based on operational needs. A smart lighting grid provides a baseline of uniformity that can adapt as the environment changes. As always, we applied our proven formula: three rows of 8–9 fixtures, evenly spaced and coordinated to maximize coverage while simplifying install.

Luminaire Specifications
This project uses the LHB11550 fixture, a go-to luminaire for high-ceiling warehouse and retail spaces. These fixtures offer long-term reliability, high lumen output, and clean beam control—perfect for large open layouts like Las Cruces.
Lighting Details:
Model: LHB11550
Lamps per Fixture: 1
Lumens per Fixture: 16,858
Fixture Quantity: 147
Total System Lumens: 2,476,026
Total System Wattage: 16,522.8 W
Light Loss Factor (LLF): 1.000
Average Illuminance: 144.22 lux
With no racking in place, the lighting in this layout is intentionally strong. Once racking is added, light levels typically reduce to around 80–90 lux (US) or foot-candles (CA)—well within our acceptable range for warehousing with shelving.

Layout Dimensions & Environmental Assumptions
Our layouts always reflect real-world conditions. For Las Cruces, we modeled the space using detailed coordinates and reflective values designed to mirror the final installed environment.
Layout Specs:
Wall Height: 20 ft
Mounting Height: 20 ft
Workplane Height: 2.5 ft
Room Reflectance Factors:
Ceiling: 0.80
Walls: 0.50
Floor: 0.20
These are default reflectance values we use for open warehouse spaces. In the field, the actual reflectance might trend slightly higher—especially if the walls or floors are lightly finished. But we prefer to design on the conservative side to avoid inflating projected brightness. This “safe range” approach ensures that our clients are pleasantly surprised when actual lighting exceeds modeled expectations.
Built for Change
One of the biggest benefits of a no-rack layout is the freedom to optimize. There are no fixed vertical obstructions, which means we can position fixtures in a way that maximizes coverage while minimizing shadows or dead zones. And if shelving is added later? The uniform spread ensures there are no dark pockets, even between aisles.
This layout is especially installer-friendly:
✅ Simple grid-based spacing
✅ Straightforward mounting at 20 ft
✅ Clean coordinate labeling for speed and accuracy

Consistency Across McCoy’s Facilities
Las Cruces follows a similar lighting philosophy we’ve implemented in other McCoy’s projects, such as Brownwood and El Paso. Each layout is tailored to the building, but they all share the same MHSC principles:
Future-proof design
Installer-first layouts
Clear documentation and modeling
Conservative photometric projections
That consistency helps general contractors and electricians move confidently between job sites, knowing they’re working with a plan built for the field—not just for presentation.
Let’s Work Together
Whether you’re managing a chain of retail stores, an industrial warehouse, or a single build-out, MHSC Energy delivers more than photometrics—we deliver peace of mind. Our layouts are designed to make your job easier and your results more reliable.
