Serving Up Better Visibility: MHSC Energy Lights Up Tennis Courts with Precision LED Design

At MHSC Energy, we know that great sports facilities don’t just happen—they’re built with careful planning, technical expertise, and a commitment to quality. Lighting, in particular, is one of the most important elements of any athletic environment. Without the right illumination, even the best-designed courts fall short in terms of performance, safety, and player enjoyment.

Our recent tennis court lighting project demonstrates how a precision-based approach to LED design delivers outstanding results. By combining advanced luminaires, detailed photometric analysis, and strategic layout design, we created a system that provides bright, uniform light across the entire playing surface while also improving energy efficiency.

Project Overview

The goal of this project was straightforward but technically demanding: provide competition-level visibility for tennis players while keeping energy usage and maintenance needs under control. Tennis is a fast-paced sport where the ball moves at high speeds and visibility is critical. Shadows, glare, or uneven light distribution can negatively affect gameplay, reduce fairness, and even increase the risk of injury.

To solve this, MHSC Energy designed and installed a system tailored specifically for outdoor tennis courts. The end result: lighting that meets the standards of both recreational and advanced play while ensuring the facility is future-ready.

Luminaire Details

We selected two high-performance fixture models, each designed to deliver maximum light output with efficiency and reliability:

  • Fixture 1: AAL1-PS300-FCCTT3 X4

    • Lamps per Fixture: 1

    • Lumens per Fixture: 42,609

    • Quantity Installed: 6

    • Total Wattage: 7,308W

    • LLF: 1.000

    • Efficiency: 100%

  • Fixture 2: AAL1-PS450-40T3 or 5

    • Lamps per Fixture: 1

    • Lumens per Fixture: 62,431

    • Quantity Installed: 6

    • Total Wattage: 5,305.2W

    • LLF: 1.000

    • Efficiency: 100%

Together, these 12 luminaires deliver an impressive 104,000+ lumens of coverage, giving the courts superior lighting levels while maintaining energy-conscious performance.

Lighting Performance Results

The completed design produced an average of 53.94 foot-candles (fc) across the court surface. This exceeds standard recommendations for outdoor tennis courts, where recreational play typically requires 30–50 fc. With higher illumination levels, players gain sharper visibility, quicker reaction times, and a better overall experience.

For those who prefer the metric system, we also calculate this in lux:

  • 53.94 fc × 10.764 = approximately 580 lux

This level of brightness ensures that athletes, coaches, and referees can see the ball clearly from all positions on the court—even during fast rallies at night.

Layout & Design Considerations

Lighting is more than just picking powerful fixtures; it’s about how those fixtures interact with the space. MHSC Energy factored in multiple design parameters to ensure consistent illumination:

  • Mounting Height: 22 ft, providing optimal downward spread without creating glare.

  • Workplane Height: 2.5 ft, representing the average playing zone for tracking the ball.

  • Room Reflectance Values:

    • Ceiling: 0.80 (if covered)

    • Walls: 0.50

    • Floor: 0.20

These values influence how light bounces across the surface, reducing contrast and ensuring visibility from every angle. By adjusting placement and beam patterns, we eliminated dark spots that often plague poorly designed court systems.

Why Tennis Requires Specialized Lighting

Unlike some other sports, tennis has very specific lighting needs:

  • Speed of Play: Tennis balls can exceed 100 mph, requiring clear tracking in all conditions.

  • Small Ball Size: Unlike larger sports equipment, tennis balls demand sharper visibility.

  • Player Safety: Even minor shadows or uneven lighting can cause missed steps or injuries.

  • Consistency Across the Court: Uneven lighting can create advantages or disadvantages depending on which side of the net a player is on.

Our system at this facility directly addresses these challenges, creating a fair, safe, and enjoyable playing environment.

Comparing to Older Systems

Many existing tennis facilities still rely on metal halide or fluorescent lighting, which comes with several drawbacks:

  • Slower Start-Up: Traditional lamps often require minutes to warm up, while LEDs provide instant full brightness.

  • Higher Energy Use: Metal halide systems consume far more power for the same output.

  • Frequent Maintenance: Older bulbs burn out faster and require regular replacements.

  • Dimming & Flicker: As traditional lights age, they lose efficiency and create inconsistent brightness.

By upgrading to LEDs, Wylie’s tennis courts now enjoy brighter light, lower operating costs, and significantly reduced maintenance needs.

Long-Term Benefits for the Facility

This project isn’t just about meeting immediate needs—it’s about setting the courts up for long-term success. With a total system wattage of only 12,613.2W, the courts benefit from powerful illumination while consuming far less energy than outdated systems. Over time, this leads to:

  • Lower Utility Bills: Reduced energy use translates to cost savings every month.

  • Sustainability Gains: A smaller energy footprint supports community sustainability goals.

  • Reliability: LLF of 1.000 ensures fixtures will maintain brightness for years before any noticeable depreciation.

  • Better Community Engagement: Extended playing hours make the courts more useful to both athletes and the wider community.

The MHSC Energy Advantage

What makes MHSC Energy unique is our full-service approach to lighting projects. We don’t just install fixtures—we design complete solutions that factor in performance, energy efficiency, and long-term ROI. For this tennis court project, that meant:
