Lighting the Game: MHSC Energy’s Soccer Field Project

Sports lighting isn’t just about brightness—it’s about precision, consistency, and creating the right environment for players, referees, and spectators. MHSC Energy’s recent Soccer Field project demonstrates how advanced LED luminaires and careful photometric planning can transform a large outdoor space into a safe, efficient, and performance-ready facility.

With powerful NBAL series fixtures, strategic placement, and detailed calculations, this project provides the coverage and visibility required for athletes to play their best while ensuring long-term efficiency for the facility.

Project Overview

Unlike indoor spaces, soccer fields pose unique lighting challenges. The field is wide and open, with no reflective ceilings or walls to bounce light. The ball moves quickly across large distances, and players need consistent visibility whether they are on one end of the pitch or the other. A well-designed system must deliver uniform, glare-controlled light without wasting energy or creating distracting hot spots.

For this project, MHSC Energy engineered a solution using NBAL-400W-T5 Narrow LED luminaires, designed to maximize throw distance and coverage while keeping energy consumption manageable.

Luminaire Details

Two fixture types were deployed in this project:

  • NBAL-400W-T5 Narrow

    • Lumens: 45,725

    • Quantity: 17

    • Total Wattage: 6,800

    • LLF: 0.900

    • Purpose: Primary field lighting, delivering high-output coverage from a 30-foot mounting height.

  • NBAL-400W-T5 Narrow X

    • Lumens: 45,725

    • Quantity: 3

    • Total Wattage: 2,400

    • LLF: 0.900

    • Purpose: Supplemental coverage for balancing field uniformity and eliminating dark zones.

Together, the 20 fixtures deliver nearly 915,000 lumens of illumination across the soccer field.

Lighting Performance Results

Photometric analysis is at the heart of every MHSC Energy project. For this soccer field, our calculations showed:

  • Average Illumination: 2.17 foot-candles (≈ 23 lux)

  • Maximum Illumination: 30.9 foot-candles (≈ 332 lux)

  • Minimum Illumination: 0.2 foot-candles (≈ 2 lux)

  • Average-to-Minimum Ratio: 10.85

  • Max/Min Ratio: 154.50

While the average illumination may appear modest compared to indoor commercial spaces, these levels are appropriate for an outdoor field. The design provides functional visibility for recreational play and ensures the facility is usable during evening hours while minimizing light pollution for surrounding areas.

Layout & Design Specifications

Lighting design is about more than fixture selection—it’s about how those fixtures interact with the environment. For this project, MHSC Energy worked with the following parameters:

  • Mounting Height: 30 ft for optimal coverage and reduced glare.

  • Workplane Height: 2.5 ft, representing the zone of player activity.

  • Reflectance Values:

    • Ceiling: 0.80 (open sky equivalent in modeling)

    • Walls: 0.50

    • Floor: 0.20 (natural grass or turf surface reflectance).

By simulating reflectance and fixture placement, our team ensured that the field received the most consistent and useful illumination possible.

Why Proper Soccer Field Lighting Matters

Lighting for soccer requires a specialized approach. Unlike some other sports, soccer involves constant movement across a large space, and the ball is relatively small and fast-moving. Poorly designed lighting systems create challenges such as shadows, dark corners, and inconsistent brightness that can affect performance and safety.

Key benefits of proper soccer field lighting include:

  • Player Safety: Reducing the risk of collisions and injuries with clear visibility.

  • Fair Play: Referees and officials can track action more effectively.

  • Performance: Athletes maintain reaction times and accuracy with proper sightlines.

  • Spectator Experience: Fans can follow the game without distraction or eye strain.

  • Community Use: Well-lit fields allow extended playing hours and community events.

Comparing Modern LEDs to Older Systems

Many outdoor fields still rely on traditional metal halide lighting, which comes with several drawbacks:

  • High Energy Consumption: Older fixtures require significantly more wattage to achieve similar brightness.

  • Frequent Maintenance: Bulbs degrade quickly, leading to uneven light levels and more replacements.

  • Warm-Up Time: Metal halide lamps take several minutes to reach full brightness, unlike LEDs that are instant-on.

  • Dimming with Age: Traditional lamps lose performance over time, creating inconsistencies across the field.

By contrast, MHSC Energy’s LED system at this soccer field offers:

  • Lower wattage consumption for reduced operating costs.

  • Instant-on performance, ideal for evening events.

  • Long fixture lifespan, minimizing maintenance.

  • Consistent brightness thanks to stable LLF values.

Long-Term Benefits

This soccer field lighting installation is built not just for immediate results, but for long-term value:

  • Energy Efficiency: Lower wattage means reduced monthly utility bills.

  • Sustainability: LEDs reduce carbon footprint while providing reliable performance.

  • Durability: Fixtures are designed for outdoor conditions, with weather resistance and longevity.

  • Flexibility: The field can now support recreational games, practices, and community use well into the evening hours.

The MHSC Energy Approach

At MHSC Energy, our process goes beyond fixture selection. We use photometric modeling to simulate real-world performance, ensuring the lighting design meets the needs of the client before installation begins.

For this soccer field, our approach included:

  • Conducting detailed photometric calculations in both foot-candles and lux.

  • Designing fixture placement around a 30-foot mounting height for optimal coverage.

  • Balancing efficiency and brightness to create a sustainable system.

  • Addressing both performance requirements and energy efficiency goals.

Conclusion

The Soccer Field project highlights MHSC Energy’s ability to deliver reliable, efficient, and athlete-focused lighting solutions. With NBAL-400W-T5 fixtures, precise layout design, and validated photometric performance, we provided a system that enhances play, supports safety, and delivers long-term value for the facility.
