MHSC Energy Enhances Safety and Visibility with Riding Arena Lighting Project

At MHSC Energy, we specialize in delivering lighting solutions that improve safety, performance, and efficiency across a variety of facilities. Our recent Riding Arena project demonstrates the importance of precision lighting in equestrian environments, where consistent visibility is essential for both rider and horse. By combining high-output LED fixtures with careful photometric planning, we created a system that delivers the brightness and uniformity needed for training, competition, and everyday use.

Project Overview

Lighting a riding arena comes with unique challenges. Unlike standard commercial spaces, arenas must accommodate fast-moving horses, variable rider skill levels, and large, open layouts. Shadows, dark corners, or glare can quickly become safety concerns. Riders need even, comfortable illumination that reduces eye strain, while horses benefit from steady light levels that minimize spooking and hesitation.

MHSC Energy engineered a lighting solution tailored specifically to this arena, ensuring high average light levels, balanced coverage, and energy efficiency.

Luminaire Details

The arena was outfitted with UHB3-UW3CCT-210W-50K fixtures, designed for high-output performance in large interior spaces. Specifications include:

  • Fixture Model: UHB3-UW3CCT-210W-50K

  • Lamps per Fixture: 1

  • Lumens per Fixture: 32,116

  • Quantity Installed: 45

  • Total Wattage: 9,166.05W

  • LLF (Light Loss Factor): 0.950

  • Efficiency: 100%

With 45 of these high-bay LED luminaires in place, the arena benefits from over 1.4 million lumens of output, ensuring riders and horses have excellent visibility across the entire facility.

Lighting Performance Results

Photometric analysis confirmed the system’s strong performance:

  • Average Illumination: 72.40 foot-candles (fc)

  • Lux Conversion: 72.40 fc × 10.764 ≈ 779 lux

This level of illumination provides more than enough brightness for training, lessons, or events while maintaining rider comfort and reducing shadows that can distract horses.

Layout & Design Specifications

MHSC Energy designed the lighting layout with attention to mounting heights, reflectance, and arena geometry:

  • Wall Height: 12–20 ft (center span)

  • Mounting Heights: 13 ft, 16 ft, and 19 ft depending on fixture location

  • Workplane Height: 2.5 ft (eye-level activity zone)

  • Reflectance Values:

    • Ceiling: 0.80

    • Walls: 0.50

    • Floor: 0.20

By varying fixture heights and factoring in reflectance values, the system delivers consistent coverage across the riding surface, minimizing shadows in corners and providing uniform brightness throughout.

Why Proper Arena Lighting Matters

Equestrian facilities demand specialized lighting to meet safety and performance needs. The benefits of MHSC Energy’s system include:

  • Rider Safety: Consistent light reduces eye strain and makes hazards easier to see.

  • Horse Comfort: Even illumination minimizes shadows that can cause hesitation or spooking.

  • Training & Competition Quality: Adequate light levels support clear visibility for riders, coaches, and judges.

  • Extended Hours of Use: Bright, efficient lighting allows arenas to operate safely well into the evening.

  • Energy Efficiency: Modern LEDs drastically reduce energy use compared to traditional metal halide systems.

Comparing LEDs to Traditional Systems

Before the widespread adoption of LEDs, many riding arenas relied on metal halide or fluorescent lighting. These systems came with major drawbacks:

  • High Energy Costs: Inefficient fixtures consumed large amounts of electricity.

  • Frequent Maintenance: Shorter lamp life led to constant replacements.

  • Inconsistent Performance: Output dimmed over time, leading to poor visibility.

  • Warm-Up Delays: Metal halides required minutes to reach full brightness.

The new LED system eliminates these challenges by offering instant-on performance, lower wattage, long lifespans, and consistent illumination.

Long-Term Benefits

This project doesn’t just improve day-to-day use—it also supports long-term operational efficiency. Key benefits include:

  • Lower Utility Bills: Reduced wattage results in meaningful monthly savings.

  • Minimal Maintenance: Longer-lasting fixtures reduce downtime and costs.

  • Consistent Output: With LLF of 0.950, the system maintains stable performance over time.

  • Sustainability: Reduced energy consumption helps the facility meet environmental goals.

The MHSC Energy Approach

Every MHSC Energy project is built on detailed photometric analysis and layout planning. For the Riding Arena, our team:

  • Selected high-output fixtures designed for large interior spaces.

  • Calculated average light levels in both fc and lux to ensure performance.

  • Designed mounting heights and placements to maximize uniformity.

  • Balanced energy efficiency with the high light levels required for equestrian activities.

Conclusion

The Riding Arena lighting project is a showcase of MHSC Energy’s ability to design systems that go beyond illumination—they enhance safety, performance, and efficiency. With UHB3-UW3CCT-210W-50K fixtures providing nearly 780 lux of brightness across the arena, riders and horses benefit from clear, comfortable visibility, while facility operators enjoy reduced costs and long-term reliability.

Whether for sports complexes, commercial facilities, or specialized environments like equestrian arenas, MHSC Energy delivers solutions that are designed with precision and built to last.
