Post Oak Square Lighting Design

Parking Lot LED Layout with Pole Lighting & Rear Building Illumination

Lighting a large retail plaza like Post Oak Square isn’t about a single solution, it’s about treating each area based on how it’s used.

This project separates the site into two distinct lighting environments: the main customer-facing parking lot and the rear/service areas behind the building.

Front of House: Parking Lot Lighting

The primary focus of the design is the main parking area, where visibility, safety, and traffic flow are critical.

Pole-mounted LED fixtures were installed at 30 feet in back-to-back configurations, allowing light to spread evenly across wide sections of the lot. This approach ensures:

  • Consistent illumination across parking rows
  • Clear visibility for vehicles and pedestrians
  • Reduced shadowing between parked cars

Rather than concentrating light in small areas, the layout distributes it outward, creating a balanced and usable environment across the entire lot.

Rear of Building: Service & Security Lighting

Behind the building, the lighting serves a completely different purpose.

Wall pack fixtures mounted at 18 feet are used to illuminate rear access areas, service zones, and utility spaces. These areas typically don’t require the same level of brightness as the front-facing lot, but they still need reliable lighting for:

  • Staff access and operations
  • Security and surveillance visibility
  • Safe navigation around the building perimeter

Because these fixtures are positioned behind the structure, they function independently from the parking lot lighting system.

Fixture Strategy

Instead of forcing one system to do everything, the design uses the right fixture for each job:

  • Pole-mounted fixtures for large-scale, open-area lighting
  • Wall packs for localized, building-mounted illumination

This separation improves efficiency and ensures each area is lit appropriately without over-lighting the entire property.

Photometric Performance

The parking lot lighting achieves an average illumination level of approximately 3.11 foot-candles, providing a strong balance between visibility and energy efficiency.

The result is:

  • Smooth, even light distribution across the lot
  • No harsh transitions or overly bright zones
  • Reliable coverage for nighttime operation

Why This Approach Works

By separating the lighting into front and rear zones, the system avoids common issues such as:

  • Wasted light spilling behind buildings
  • Over-lighting low-use areas
  • Under-lighting critical customer-facing spaces

Each area is treated based on its function, leading to a more practical and efficient overall design.

Final Outcome

The Post Oak Square lighting layout delivers a clean, well-structured solution:

  • Strong, uniform parking lot illumination
  • Dedicated rear lighting for service and safety
  • Efficient use of fixtures and output

This project highlights how thoughtful zoning and fixture placement can create a lighting system that is both effective and purpose-driven.
